Networking Spotlight with Loree Lash-Valencia

How has networking contributed to your professional growth and success?

As you progress in your career so much success comes from being able to reach, seek guidance or support from people in your network. And it is a joy to help others as well.

What are your top networking tips for building strong connections in your industry?

Be genuine, curious, and authentic in all your interactions. It is helpful if you truly enjoy connecting with people but don't let fear get in your way of reaching out. I find groups like this and others are great whether they meet in person or digitally and I am a big fan of Linked In. Try to make it a habit to reach out to a few people, without an agenda each day, and watch your network grow. Be sure to share your voice and opinions on other people's content as well.

In what ways has networking opened doors to new ventures for you?

So many opportunities that have come my way have been through my network. One person refers me to another or makes an introduction to someone they think might have common interests. The best fit opportunities seem to come this way. Plus, I love the serendipity of it all.

How do you balance online networking with in-person interactions to maximize your connections?

I think Covid has radically changed just how much online networking I do. That coupled with the move out of NYC, I would say my in-person connections are much less often and a bit more scheduled than they used to be. I do feel I spend a great deal of time online.

Share a piece of advice for those who may feel hesitant or shy about networking.

I understand that it might feel intimidating but think of it like a muscle that will get stronger with practice. Think about how you would feel if someone reached out to you and then you will realize that people really do, for the most part, like to connect with other people!

How has the colab helped you?

Well, I just joined recently so just getting started, but being connected with so many people with shared passions is very exciting to me. I love the balance of structured and unstructured connecting opportunities. Great job, Kristy!
