Tell us about your background:

I was a chemistry major in college and switched to fashion when a best friend at the time said she was moving to NYC. I've always wanted to live in the city so I jumped at the chance to go with her. This was in August and with no plans whatsoever, I dropped out of Loyola and moved much to the dismay of my parents. I promptly got a job counting diamonds with a jeweler, enrolled at F.I.T. and lived in the Webster Apartments. The jeweler was good friends with Kay Unger who founded and owned St. Gillian, a big dress brand at the time, so she recommended me to go work for her, which I did. Starting out as Kay's PA while I attended classes, I kept showing Kay my sketches and she made me an assistant designer. From there, I worked my way up, learning my craft.

I've been a Designer, Design Director, Creative Director, Vice President and COO with brands in Bridge, Better and Contemporary markets. I have made many licensee deals such as House of Dereon, Nicole Miller for JCPenney as well as launched different labels while at Bahari Group. Currently, I'm the Creative Director at a company called Lily Apparel with plans to launch a sustainable, cruelty-free RTW label aimed at the bridge- contemporary price point.

What do you wish you’d known when you started out?

To really take the time to network. To build a community of like minds of creatives and business professionals. When I was coming up, we didn't have all these social network platforms, but I should have paid more attention to this aspect of business.

Best career advice you've ever received?

I never received any advice, but I have plenty to give. I've observed that successful individuals often possess the ability to process information swiftly and transition smoothly.

What leadership qualities are important to you?

Having a vision and being able to clearly communicate that vision. Taking responsibility, owning decisions and actions. Quick decision-making ability.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?

Getting people to understand that I am both equally a designer/creative as well as very business minded. I have led all departments for various fashion companies.

And for fun, what is your favorite wardrobe staple?

My favorite white dress and black cashmere pull-over from The Row.
