In Conversation with Sara Roberts
Tell us about your background:
I started Goldie Home during the pandemic. I had worked in Fashion + Publishing for all of my career for 20+ years at ad agencies, on the client side, and most recently at Hearst. I had left my role as Creative Services Director at ELLE and was about to take another position in the corporate sector when Covid hit. We found ourselves cooped up inside our NYC apartment spending time like we had never had before with our family of four and a few things became very prescient:
+I rediscovered how energizing and healing being creative and tapping into my artistic self could be.
+I reminded myself that before my corporate life, I had always wanted to take my art and put it on textiles and maybe that was the time to do it!
+And just as important, I discovered how incredibly special family dinners were, especially when we set the table beautifully. We just sat longer and the conversation lingered.
A lot more transpired but I pretty much decided the time felt right and I launched Goldie Home and almost two years later, it's growing and is really exciting.
Goldie was my grandmother's name and is my daughter and niece's middle name. My grandmother was full of beauty, personality, fun, strength, and a bit of whimsy and celebration. It's this essence that I hope Goldie Home brings to people's homes (tables and more). Goldie Home is about bringing Art, Beauty, and Fun to the table.
What do you wish you’d known when you started out?
This is a hard one. I wish I knew to take it just a tad slower and not rush into things and to trust your gut completely. When I launched Goldie Home, I wanted SO badly to put something out there and see what people thought in real time. Instead, it would have saved me a lot of headache and nervous days (and nights) if I had waited a bit longer to ensure what I was putting out there had the benefit of time and diligence.
Best career advice you've ever received?
Fake it until you make it and and believe in yourself because if you don't no-one else will. Those two mantras are so simple but so true and resonate with me everyday.
What leadership qualities are important to you?
Transparency. Grit. Hard work. Creativity. Realistic when it comes to budgets and timelines. Most of all, never stop believing and working towards the vision.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?
Production. I had never worked in production before to the degree I am now and ironically, production is the biggest part of my business. If I don't have a trusted partner, it's hard to grow and scale. I have been determined to figure this out (and I am ) and however frustrating and incredibly difficult it is, it's been a great learning experience and I know a necessary means to achieving a greater goal.
And for fun, what is your favorite wardrobe staple?
High-waisted pants always and a great crop top or button down tucked in.
