In Conversation with Rachel Knodel

Tell us about your background:

I am a visual designer and a recent graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Spatial Experience Design program. My passion lies in creating immersive, story-driven environments that enhance how people interact with spaces. Before transitioning into design, I worked in customer service within spas and the beauty industry, where I developed a strong understanding of client needs, attention to detail, and the importance of creating welcoming, engaging experiences.

This background in customer service informs my approach to design—ensuring that spaces are not only visually compelling but also intuitive and user-friendly. In my most recent role at C&G Partners, I was part of the 3D design team, building models and developing realistic visualizations that supported client narratives. I collaborated across disciplines, contributing to wayfinding systems, environmental branding, and material sourcing while staying on top of schedules and budgets. My ability to blend technical skills with a human-centered approach allows me to craft thoughtful, engaging experiences that resonate with audiences. Now, I am eager to apply this expertise to new opportunities where I can continue shaping dynamic environments through design.

What do you wish you’d known when you started out?

I also wish I had understood the power of networking and mentorship earlier. So much of the industry thrives on collaboration and relationships, and seeking guidance from experienced professionals can open doors in ways I never anticipated.

Best career advice you've ever received?

A mentor once told me that the most successful designers—and professionals in any field—are the ones who remain curious. Industries evolve, tools change, and new challenges arise, but those who remain open to growth, feedback, and exploration will always find opportunities.

What leadership qualities are important to you?

I believe that being empathic is what makes leadership truly effective; when a leader understands and values the people they work with, they build trust and foster collaboration.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?

Despite having a strong background in design, including hands-on experience in experiential and spatial design, it has been challenging to find the right position that aligns with my skills and aspirations. However, this process has taught me resilience, the importance of networking, and how to effectively communicate my value to potential employers. Each interview and application has refined my approach, and I remain optimistic that the right opportunity is on the horizon.

How do you define success in your career, and how has that definition evolved over time?

Early on, I saw success as simply securing a role in design and executing projects effectively. However, as I’ve grown, my definition has evolved to include continuous learning, collaboration, and making a tangible difference in the way people engage. It’s also about personal growth—building confidence in my skills, embracing change, and finding fulfillment in the process, not just the outcome.

How has networking contributed to your professional growth and success?

Since graduating from FIT’s Spatial Experience Design program, connecting with professionals has helped me understand industry expectations, refine my approach to job searching, and even receive mentorship from those who have been in my position before. Networking has provided guidance, encouragement, and potential job leads that have been invaluable in navigating this career shift.

What are your top networking tips for building strong connections in your industry?

To be genuine. Ask insightful questions and listen actively rather than just focusing on what you can gain.
