In Conversation with Gillian Goldstein

Tell us about your background:

Hi! My name is Gillian Goldstein, and I’m from Manhattan. I grew up on the Upper East Side and attended Hewitt, an all-girls school, from kindergarten through my senior year of high school. Growing up in New York City, surrounded by vibrant culture, I developed a deep connection to self-expression through style and creativity. From a young age, I was inspired by the ever-evolving trends and artistic diversity around me, which shaped my passion for fashion, beauty, entertainment, music, and more.

I attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I pursued a bachelor’s degree in Consumer Behavior and Marketplace Studies, along with a certificate in Entrepreneurship. My marketing journey has been heavily influenced by the power of personal storytelling, which continues to drive my innovative thinking. With hands-on experience in consumer behavior and digital marketing, I blend an eye for aesthetics with analytical precision. I lead with empathy, always striving to connect with and understand the people I work with, which has strengthened both my interpersonal and creative skills. My adaptability, strong work ethic, and commitment to creative excellence position me to thrive in fast-paced environments and collaborative communities.

Some of my hobbies include skiing, pickleball, attending concerts and live shows, and photography! As a recent graduate entering the workforce, I’m excited to start my marketing career and to be part of an online network that connects me with individuals in the fields I’m passionate about.

What do you wish you’d known when you started out?

After graduating from college this past May and entering the job market, I initially took rejections from companies or positions that felt like a good fit very personally. I wish I had known then what I understand now: rejection is just redirection. Knowing where you aren't meant to be is just as valuable as knowing where you are. Instead of being upset and wondering what I could have done differently, I now try to reframe my mindset and say 'thank you' instead. Thank you for bringing me one step closer to the job or place that is truly right for me.

Best career advice you've ever received?

The best career advice I ever received is to never be afraid to advocate for yourself. If you don't ask, you don't get. Success often requires stepping out of your comfort zone and making sure your voice is heard. It can feel uncomfortable at times, but growth happens when you're willing to embrace discomfort. Being proactive about your goals and vocalizing them are the keys to reaching your full potential.

What leadership qualities are important to you?

I find empathy to be one of the most important leadership qualities to me. A good leader is not just confident, knowledgeable and communicative, but also understanding and emotionally attuned to their team's needs. An empathetic leader takes the time to listen and supports team members through challenges. They champion the differences between one another and lead with compassion. I believe that this kind of approach not only fosters a positive work environment, but also builds trust and motivation within the team, which leads to a stronger and more collaborative dynamic.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?

Since I graduated this past spring and am still in the job search, the biggest challenge I’ve faced so far has been getting my foot in the door. The job market is competitive, and it can be tough to stand out among so many qualified candidates. While I understand that no first job will be perfect, I’m focused on finding a position that will serve as a solid foundation and a springboard for my next opportunity. Although it is easy to get discouraged, i've been trying to teach myself to remain confident and steadfast in my search!

And for fun, what is your favorite wardrobe staple?

My favorite wardrobe staple is a good blazer. Its versatile, can be worn day to night, and always looks chic!
