Networking Spotlight with Katie Irving

How has networking contributed to your professional growth and success?

I spent 15 years in the corporate world – most of that time with the same company! I didn't understand the value of networking until I made the leap to leave corporate and launched my agency. The relationships I've built over the past 4 years have truly changed the course of my business and have proven to me that introverts can, indeed, network successfully. In fact, I think we might have a superpower for authentic networking!

What are your top networking tips for building strong connections in your industry?

#1: Authenticity always wins the day. Networking shouldn't feel transactional, ever. Keep showing up, reaching out, meeting new people and being true to yourself in every interaction.
#2: Give without expecting in return. I connect people all the time – literally on a weekly basis. Occasionally, it proves to be directly beneficial to me. But, most of the time, it's just a nice thing to do! I do it because it gives me a lot of joy to connect people and see them do amazing work together.

In what ways has networking opened doors to new ventures for you?

Almost 100% of Moonshot's clients are a direct result of networking. From industry connections to referrals, networking is the engine that drives all of our new business.

How do you balance online networking with in-person interactions to maximize your connections?

I'm based in Columbus, Ohio and most of my clients are based in LA and NY which makes travel an important part of my networking process. I make an effort to travel to LA and NY 2-3 times a year for networking events and client meetups. These trips always pay for themselves many times over because networking in-person is the real deal! I'm grateful for Zoom, but face to face is crucial to building long-term relationships.

Share a piece of advice for those who may feel hesitant or shy about networking.

If you are more of an introvert, focus on one-to-one conversations instead of group events. Reach out to your network directly to schedule virtual or IRL coffee chats and you'll be amazed at how easy (and fun!) it is to connect authentically and in a non-overwhelming way.

How has the colab helped you?

I made connections when the co-lab first launched back in 2020 who have become a core part of my network over the years. In fact, one of them referred several clients to Moonshot this year. Co-lab is truly the gift that keeps on giving. Also, I've found and hired incredible freelancers via the co-lab!
