Joanne Franca Sexton

Tell us about your background:

Artist, dime store sociologist, retoucher, Dad. A lifelong New Yorker, I studied at the School of Visual Arts, where I graduated with a degree in Fine Arts with an emphasis on sculpture. I started retouching as a way to pay rent and quickly fell in love with the idea of creating perfection digitally on an always wet canvas.

What do you wish you’d known when you started out?

I really wish I knew early on that it's ok to not know something, and that it's ok to ask for help.

Best career advice you've ever received?

"Embrace the young." A mentor of mine said it to me once upon seeing my frustration with a new hire. He told me that it's a trap people fall into as they age to just dismiss the younger generation. Build them up and learn from what they learn from you. It's why, to this day, mentoring is my favorite part of leading a team.

What leadership qualities are important to you?

Patience, fairness, empathy, boldness and decisiveness.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?

The COVID-19 pandemic.

And for fun, what is your favorite wardrobe staple?

The right hat for the right occasions. A fine, clean, straight even hat.
