In Conversation with Hillary Sorrentino
Tell us about your background:
I have always been an artist, from coloring books to painting on canvas! Born and raised at the Jersey Shore, always with NYC in the background. I studied at Rhode Island School of Design, where I graduated with a BFA in apparel design. My career brought me to Miami, Southern California, and New York, where I designed swimwear, soft accessories, even dog clothes!
I always had a strong eye for print and pattern, but was missing the painting & creating. After working fifteen years full time in the fashion world, I decided to go off on my own as a freelance print designer & illustrator. It’s been 8 years now, and I'm so happy where I am. I have amazing clients and exciting projects, I paint custom prints for so many brands. My work is most often used in the sleepwear, swim, and home spaces. Recently my family and I moved to the Denver metro area- it’s been a big change, but I think it’s good to mix it up sometimes!
What do you wish you’d known when you started out?
You can forge your own path after putting in the time. I began my career doing tech packs and fittings, not my favorite. Still, I met so many wonderful people working full time in the industry which helped build my freelance business. Now I get to do what I love!
Best career advice you've ever received?
You have to pay your dues. There are no shortcuts!
What leadership qualities are important to you?
Being decisive, understanding the process. Humility. Kindness and gratitude for your team.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?
Since I work from home and have two young boys, it's been difficult to juggle caring for them, and not being distracted being home.
And for fun, what is your favorite wardrobe staple?
Crocs... my husband works for crocs!
