In Conversation with Felisha Ellison
Tell us about your background:
I studied advertising and fashion merchandising at The University of Georgia where I began designing for student fashion shows. After graduation, I moved to New York to attend Parsons School of Design for fashion design. While in New York, I gained a range of experience working in the design, wholesale and retail sectors of the industry for brands such as Chloé, Cartier, and Tracy Reese. I now reside in my hometown, Atlanta, GA, where I continue to develop patterns and designs in order to launch my own portfolio of work.
What do you wish you’d known when you started out?
I wish that I knew to actively network outside of the immediate companies that I worked for. Since joining the co-lab, I’ve learned how impactful networking can be and how useful it is in guiding your career journey. I also wish that I knew to engage in more outside personal development activities that enrich and holistically support a successful work life.
Best career advice you've ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received is to never stop learning. Always seek out opportunities to learn new skills and tools for the workplace. This will lead to new networking opportunities and expand your own desirability as a highly-skilled employee.
What leadership qualities are important to you?
Leadership qualities that are important to me include emotional intelligence, empathy, inclusivity, and self-awareness.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career so far?
The biggest challenge in my career thus far has been navigating the industry in New York City without the financial support needed to thrive.
And for fun, what is your favorite wardrobe staple?
My favorite wardrobe staple is my Chloé Tess bag that I won by winning Chloé’s international creativity contest!
